Wounded brands such as Taco Bell can take years to recover. What the 5,600-unit fast-food behemoth is about to try is almost unprecedented. It's making so many major changes at the same time that next to the wildly successful McDonald's turnaround of the past decade, this could rank as one of fast food's most complex turnaround attempts in decades. Its likelihood of success — or failure — rests on the head of a Doritos chip.
Continuing, the USA Today article points out just how successful the Dorito Taco has been during the testing phase:Two commonly ridiculed "junk" foods — the Doritos chip and the Taco Bell taco — are being rolled into one. In this case, one plus one might not equal two. For Taco Bell, it may equal millions of dollars in incremental sales. The year has hardly begun, but there's already industry chatter about the Doritos-laced taco emerging as one of the nation's top new products this year.
Test-market results around Toledo, Ohio, San Bernardino and Bakersfield have been outside the bun. About three in 10 consumers are ordering the new tacos — an enormous number for a new product. In northwest Ohio, where 14 stores are selling the new tacos, sales of Doritos Locos Tacos outnumber conventional tacos, says franchisee Don Unruh. "It's been huge," he says.In more good news for those that like other types of Doritos, Taco Bell plans to "extend the line to Cool Ranch and, ultimately, even more of the current 123 Doritos flavors worldwide."
Both tacos feature lightly beer-battered Alaskan Pollock. Sustainably fished from the very cold waters of the Bering Sea, Alaskan Pollock is the freshest filet available. The light beer batter takes on an extra kick of flavor with heat from Cayenne pepper. Beer-battered Pollock filets are tucked into warm corn tortillas and topped with shredded cabbage and fresh cilantro. The Classic Baja Fish Taco is drizzled with a Baja style Lime Crema sauce and the Spicy Chipotle Fish Taco is topped with smoky hot Chipotle sauce. A slice of fresh lime adds a burst of citrus flavor to each taco.In terms of nutrition, the Classic Baja Fish Taco has 252 calories, 13.5 grams of fat and 7 grams of protein. Meanwhile, the Spicy Chipotle Fish Taco has 254 calories, 13.5 grams of fat and 7 grams of protein.
AZCentral recently reported that there are five new Chipotle restaurants that have opened or are opening very soon in the state, four in the Phoenix Metro area and one in Prescott. Below is a list of opening dates and addresses:

Previously reported by the AZFoodDude here and here, Chipotle is about to open at the Scottsdale Pavilions at Talking Stick. Not only is Chipotle set to open there on June 27th, which is ahead of the rumored July opening, but the Paradise Valley Mall location is set to open just a few days later. From the press release:"Scottsdale and Phoenix, Ariz., residents will soon each have a new Chipotle (Chi-POAT-lay) Mexican Grill to call their own, bringing the total number of Chipotle locations in Arizona to 45. Chipotle, the burrito restaurant known for serving Food With Integrity, will open at The Pavilions at Talking Stick on Monday, June 27...and at the Paradise Valley Mall in Phoenix on Thursday, June 30..."Both locations will be open from 11am to 10pm daily, but you may want to make it a late lunch on opening day:
"To say thank you for welcoming additional Chipotle locations to each neighborhood, the new restaurants will hold promotions on their respective opening days. The first 100 customers who purchase a burrito after 3 p.m. will receive a free biodegradable, BPA-free water bottle and a free burrito card they can bring back to use anytime following opening day (fax and online orders are not eligible)."
If you enjoyed the Albuquerque Turkey and the Windy City Pastrami, you're in luck. Schotzsky's is bringing them back along with a new sandwich, Buffalo Chicken. The sandwiches are described in the press release this way:Buffalo Chicken - Thinly sliced roasted chicken breast, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onion, topped with Schlotzsky’s famous Louisiana hot sauce on toasted Sourdough bread and served with bleu cheese dressing on the side.
As part of their "hot hitz!" promotion, the sandwiches will be around until August 28th.
